The Stranding

June 2021

“There’s a sparrow lying on the crust of the snow, beak open, one wing folded. George watches it from a wary distance, gritting his teeth to keep them from chattering, hands shoved tightly up under his armpits. There’s something strangely perfect about it, no blood or scattered feathers. But nothing living could be that still.”

In the middle of a snowstorm something vast falls out of the sky and two children set out to find it. Published by Metaphorosis Magazine where it can be read online or listened to as a podcast. (Sci-fi.)

A Sense of Grandeur

July 2021

I’m lying on my back one night, sprawled out like a starfish, when something wakes me. A dribble of liquid on my forehead, as warm and thick as saliva. It’s not the cat; I can feel the hot lump of her on my toes.

My eyes fly open. I look up. And up. And up. I cannot see the ceiling. There is no ceiling.”

A woman moves into a new flat only to find walls that inch taller every day and a gathering abyss overhead. Published by Bandit Fiction. (Horror)

Get Him and Keep Him Too

May 2021

“There were witches online who tattooed sigils into their arms, wrote spells into twitter posts that could be charged through reblogging. I exhausted the blogs of tumblr sorceresses with dyed hair and septum piercings. I flicked through photo after photo on Instagram; white beaches, stone circles, incense smoking on altars. I read academic texts and then dismissed them. The tone was too cynical, everything was theoretical. I needed something real.”

A woman suffering from unrequited love turns to online witchcraft to get the man of her dreams…piece by piece if necessary. Read it at Horla Magazine.

A Death in the Family

April 2022

“Maybe the house has not always been this small, maybe it is shrinking or maybe Winona is just getting larger and larger. They say everything is different when you come back to your childhood house. They say you can’t go home again but maybe they mean you shouldn’t, maybe they mean don’t, it’s not safe.”

A family gathers to see through the final days of their patriarch, only to find he’s made a miraculous recovery. As he grows stronger, so does his appetite. (Horror)

The Most Beautiful Dress

April 2021

“Nothing had ever fit her so well before. No house or haircut or hand. ”

A short transformation story. (Fantasy)
